Tobacco and Jobs

A growing number of employers are refusing to hire people just because they smoke or dip. In some cases, adult tobacco consumers have even been fired from their jobs just because they use tobacco products during their free time, and that’s not right.

Some hospitals in major states like Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and others have stopped hiring tobacco users altogether – and this is a growing trend.

You could be the most qualified person for the job, have the right professional background, and even have some stellar references. But in some workplaces, if you smoke or dip, you won’t get hired. Some companies are even adopting policies that say if they know you use tobacco products, you could be fired.

The good news is that a majority of states and the District of Columbia have laws on the books that limit an employer’s ability to make hiring or firing decisions based on tobacco use. But make sure to watch your local news and keep an eye out for proposals in your area.
